Who We
Are
Quinte's Children of Chernobyl or "QCOC" was formed in 1998 to provide
medical and humanitarian aid to the people of Belarus and Ukraine who continue
to live each day amidst the radioactive pollutants of the world's worst nuclear
disaster. A non-profit, charitable organization, the fund is based in Belleville
.
Why We Formed the QCOC
The early morning explosion of Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear plant on
April 26, 1986 is still a grim fact of life for the people who live in
contaminated regions of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. The small country of
Belarus (just 10 km north of the Chernobyl power plant) received over 70 per
cent of the radioactive fallout due to wind and weather patterns that day.
Our Fund focuses on the most vulnerable portion of the Belarussian and
Ukrainian population - the children. An estimated 1,500,000 live in the affected
areas.
